Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Technologies Lead Bei Yang recently discussed the progress the entertainment industry has made in relation to virtual reality. Disney has been brainstorming possible virtual reality experiences since the 1980's with the in-depth Disney Quest experience, and the "Nintendo's Virtual Boy". As those projects fell short, Disney continued their virtual reality excursion from another angle. "Soarin' Over California", a Disney favorite, is a lo-fi version of virtual reality experienced through IMAX 70mm on a massive screen. Disney avoided a physical VR experience, and instead opted for "caves", surrounding the individual with high resolution displays. Though it is far from finished, the Disney virtual reality experience is extremely promising.
